Transport Crisis, Transport Forum August 2007

MTF together with Citizens for Liveable Melbourne, held a transport forum in the Melbourne Town Hall on Thursday 30th August 2007. 180 attended, to hear the following speakers address various aspects of the public transport system.

Paul Mees claimed that the current public transport system could be better managed to carry far more passengers.

Janet Rice argued that global realities of climate change and peak oil required major changes to transport activity if we are to reduce greenhouse emissions and become less oil dependent. Priority investment in more sustainable transport options is essential, including public transport.

Peter Fitzgerald demonstrated that infrastructure investment is dominated by the powerful interests of private financiers in the form of public private partnerships (PPPs) rather than community travel needs.

That this meeting calls on the Federal Government to contribute to funding public transport services throughout Australia to meet the needs of public transport users
